After years of working in fine jewelry at her family-owned business, Christina Medawar took the leap and fulfilled her dream of opening a fashion jewelry store of her own. Christina shot her first commercial for Medawar Jewelers at the age of 4 years old and spent a lot of her childhood with her family at their showrooms. After learning the ins and outs of the business during her late teen years, she took over the management of Medawar Jewelers alongside her brother at the tender age of 20 years old. Finally, in fall of 2013 the first interactive Veloce Jewelry store was launched and the Medawar legacy carried on by Christina. Read on to find out more about this one-of-a-kind concept store and tips on managing your own business.
What were the defining moments in your career at Medawar jewelers?
I’ve watched my parents and cousins work with clients for a long time, so when I started doing it myself it was a huge step for me and almost like a rite of passage. Another big moment for me was the first time I attended the JCK Las Vegas show, which is the jewelry industry’s premiere trade show. Being able to choose the pieces for myself and deciding the placement of the jewelry was very new and exciting.
What was it like taking over the Medawar business?
My brother and I have been managing the Medawar stores for about 8 years now, and it was scary and challenging in the beginning. We still get some direction from our parents but It’s still hard because we have to decide what pieces go in each store and predict what will be popular in each location.
How was opening Veloce a different experience for you?
With Veloce I had to do everything from A – Z on my own. I had to pick the lines before the store has opened, and do research on that particular market. I’m still working on getting Veloce to where I want it to be, and I’d eventually want to open up more stores in other states or even countries.
Tell me about the technology used in the Veloce store.
The jewelry is on open display and connected by a wire to a screen. The customer can pick up the jewelry to try it on, which then ignites the screen giving you all the details of the piece such as its size, materials and price. This technology is the first of it’s kind and is patented by Medawar. This unique concept has made brands really interested in being part of our store.
How do you balance between Medawar, Veloce and your personal life?
You just have to take it one week at a time. It’s very important to stick to a strict schedule and follow through with it. I try to split my time well, but I do end up taking work home and checking emails when I’m off the clock. It’s hard but you do it because you love it and at the end of the day I can go home and put my feet up and relax. I also have great people working at the stores which is very helpful.
What’s next for you and for Veloce?
I’m working on designing my own line of fashion jewelry, and it should be ready some time in 2015. It’s already in the works and will be manufactured locally. I’m excited and I’m working on many things but I have a lot of help. I’m so blessed.
